Introduction
This pedagogical statement introduces a Media Arts unit for Years 9 and 10 that critically engages students with the themes of identity, race, and the representation of Indigenous Australians in media. Grounded in the Australian Curriculum and informed by contemporary educational theory, the unit combines critical inquiry with creative production to foster students’ media literacy and cultural awareness. Through an inclusive, differentiated, and multimodal approach, the unit aims to equip learners with the tools to both deconstruct media narratives and produce meaningful media texts that challenge stereotypes and celebrate diverse perspectives.
