Professional Learning Audit and Engagement Plan
In preparing to teach VCE Media Units 3 and 4, I have identified both strengths and areas for growth in my professional practice. My current strengths lie in curriculum planning, narrative analysis, and designing creative, project-based learning tasks that engage students in authentic media production. I also feel confident in applying High Impact Teaching Strategies (HITS), particularly in structuring lessons with clear learning intentions, scaffolding student work, and using feedback to drive improvement. These skills will support students in meeting Outcome 1 of the VCAA Media Study Design (2025–2029), which emphasises critical analysis of narratives and the application of media codes and conventions (VCAA, 2025).
However, I recognise emerging professional learning needs that require targeted development. First, I need to deepen my knowledge of contemporary digital production tools and industry workflows to ensure students’ practical skills are aligned with current professional standards. Second, I want to strengthen my assessment literacy, particularly in designing rubrics that align tightly with VCE criteria while also supporting student creativity and risk-taking (Brookhart, 2018). Finally, I acknowledge the importance of extending my intercultural competence by integrating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander voices, as well as other diverse perspectives, into Media teaching to enrich students’ understanding of narrative and representation (Nakata, 2011).
My professional engagement plan will therefore include participating in VCAA and ATOM professional learning workshops, collaborating with colleagues in Media education networks, and engaging with current scholarship in media pedagogy. This reflective, ongoing process will strengthen my capacity to facilitate rigorous, inclusive, and creative discipline-based learning in senior secondary contexts.
